The Ban on R22 Refrigerant

R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is harmful to the environment. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and ultimately all air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.

What does this mean for you?

If you own a heating and air conditioning system that currently uses R-22 refrigerant, it does not mean you have to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the costs will rise, production will continue until 2020. At that point recycled refrigerants should be accessible for a while.
