How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a critical part as your furnace prepares to heat your home.
Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and creates heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t functioning the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off for your safety.
Your furnace will tell you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
